Threat of Inclement Weather on Labor Day Cancels Ashford Manor's Final 'Concert on the Lawn'

The last concert, which was to feature The Sensational Sounds of Motown, will not be rescheduled.

The following is a news release from Ashford Manor: The farewell performance… To all our loyal supporters, those planning to help celebrate our last “Concert on the Lawn”, and those coming for the first time to experience what everyone has been talking about for the last 12 years, we thank you all and regret to say that we have cancelled tonight’s final Ashford Concert, featuring The Sensational Sounds of Motown. We planned to go out with a bang. We had not planned for the bang to be a clap of thunder. The U.S. weather service tells us to expect, many claps of thunder, lightning and a projected inch of rain. Thunder, and especially rain and lighting, do not mix well with thousands of amps of electricity needed to put on the show. And not …

Are You One of Those People Who Will be Laboring on Labor Day?

It’s a holiday to recognize working people by giving them a day off, yet there are still people who have to clock in today. Are you one of them?

Today, Americans will celebrate Labor Day, a federal holiday that started in the late 19th century with protests by union workers. It’s also a day in which its significance has changed over the years, as noted by businessdailynews.com, which explained how many Americans think of it as an official end to summer rather than a holiday for workers. And, while office staff, corporate employees and government workers all get the day off, there still are thousands of Americans who will clock in. Supermarkets, department stores, restaurants and bars have been opening their doors on Labor Day in recent years, meaning just another day of work for those employees. Are you one of those employees? Are you working this Labor Day?

Graduating Job Hunters Play Waiting Game at Home

In a difficult economy, many graduates return to their childhood homes looking for work.

Many college graduates are finding themselves in a decidedly retro phenomenon, where economic independence starts from the security of their parents' homes. "What seems to be changing is not that kids are returning home for a while after college, but how long they are living at home before they can leave," said Lawrence Levy, executive dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Long Island's Hofstra University. That could have widespread implications for local communities. Is your family part of this trend, where college graduates have returned home? Share in the comments below.  Changing economic dynamics and cultural shifts are among the reasons experts cite for the re-emergence of nuclear, multi-generational family homes not …

We always do.  So, this Labor Day throw yourself and Summer, the dynamic gardening duo, a farewell party to remember. After all, from the looks of your rose-thorn-scarred arms, poison-ivy rash and grubby fingernails, you deserve it!  Your tomato patch was stellar this year! It seems like only yesterday you were plastering the walls of Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest with images of your first …

First Monday in September: Just Another Day?

What's the story behind the Labor Day holiday? Find out here.

The holiday is celebrated every year on the first Monday in September, but what does Labor Day signify?  According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the first observance of Labor Day is believed to have been a parade of 10,000 workers on Sept. 5, 1882, in New York City organized by Peter J. McGuire, a Carpenters and Joiners Union secretary. By 1893, more than half the states were observing “Labor Day” on one day or another, and Congress passed a bill to establish a federal holiday in 1894, which was signed by President Grover Cleveland soon after, designating the first Monday in September as Labor Day. Here are some additional facts and information from the U.S. Census Bureau…
