Thinking of volunteering? Angela Helwig has some advice for you.
To say that Angela Helwig has her hands full is an enormous understatement. Being a wife and mother, as we all know, is a full-time job. And speaking of full-time jobs, her role as administrative assistant to the Oconee County Board Of Commissioners serves up another task for the busy lady. But let’s not stop there. As executive director of the Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission, even more of her time is spent serving her community. All of those roles require organizational skills, publicity and advertising know-how, and attention to detail. It's a lot of hours and dedication. But there’s more. Oh yes, more! Saturday's Great Oconee Cleanup was well attended, but there is still a lot of work to do.
From the standpoint of the wonderful volunteers of the Keep Oconee County Clean and Beautiful Commission, Saturday's Great Oconee Cleanup Event was a huge success. Total numbers have not been tallied as of Sunday morning as I write this article, but Executive Director Angela Helwig estimates well over 100 people showed up to help. Adopt-A-Mile groups, Boy Scouts, and teams of friends selected areas to pick up litter, and the Rivers Alive Group held a clean up at the Apalachee River US Highway 78 location. All the volunteers picked up bags and bags of roadside, trail and creek-side litter. They returned the bags to the library for weighing and sorting of recyclables. Roadside litter costs tax dollars and a whole lot more.
The following article was submitted to Oconee Patch by Melissa Steele. She works closely with the Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission. As an auxiliary member of Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission, I have recently been very involved in helping with The Great Oconee Clean Up. With everyone so aware of where their money is going these days, I decided to focus this second article on how roadside litter costs us all tax dollars in the clean up effort. I asked a series of questions to Board of Commissioners Chairman Melvin Davis, Director of Public Works Emil Beshara and Sheriff Scott Berry.
