Oconee School Board Requests Grade Change
The Oconee County Board of Education votes to ask the state for a change in elementary school grading policy.
The Oconee County School Board is asking the state for permission to change the way fourth- and fifth-grade teachers report their students' grades. The district wants to grade these students based on how well they meet performance standards under Georgia's standards-based curriculum, instead of the traditional percentage scale. If the state approves the board's request, fourth-grade teachers will be recording report card grades differently next year. The change would take effect for fifth grade in the 2012-2013 school year. Grades K-3 already use the new standards-based system. The changes in grading would follow this year's third graders all the way through their elementary career. One interesting point to consider is our current group of 3rd graders. They are the "guinea pigs" in this grading experiment and they are getting the short end of the stick.
