Oconee School Board Looks at Potential Local Impact of Looming Automatic Spending Cuts to Federal Education
School officials expect to receive $1.67 million less in funding for federal school programs over the next nine years if sequestration goes into effect on March 1, 2013.
If automatic spending cuts to federal education go into effect next month as planned, Oconee County Schools will see funding for federal school programs dwindle over the next decade. Dr. Claire Miller, assistant superintendent for Teaching and Learning, told the Oconee County School Board about the potential impact at a work session on Monday. "Simply put, sequestration is the cancellation of previously approved spending - an automatic form of spending cuts" according to Miller's report. "As modified by the fiscal cliff deal passed by Congress Jan. 1, sequestration will take effect March 1, 2013, but impose cuts over a period of nine years, 2013–2021."
