Caterpillar employees on Monday reported to work for the first time at the Oconee-Athens plant that is to become the company's global source for small track-type tractors. The office area is complete, and construction of the manufacturing space isn't far behind. Gray Construction is expected to finish it by the end of the month, according to a news release. "We are right on schedule with this project, and although the building is still a work in progress, it's great to be in our new home," plant manager Todd Henry said in a released statement. The 850,000 square-foot facility will produce mini hydraulic excavators later this year and small track-type tractors by 2014. "The 'now hiring' sign is definitely hanging in our window," Henry …

Plant manager Todd Henry says a grand opening of the facility is slated for November.
In just a matter of weeks, Caterpillar will be moving into its new plant, currently under construction in Bogart. Plant manager Todd Henry told members of the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 24 at the organization's annual meeting that excitement is brewing as March 1 approaches. A North Carolina firm specializing in painting and paint removal has chosen to open a location in Watkinsville that will service the new Caterpillar plant. The Oconee Enterprise reports Industrial Finishing Specialists, based out of Sanford, will move into the building at 1051 Business Boulevard. A representative of the company told the newspaper it offers an innovative method using hot sand to strip paint called the "fluid clean process." "It is environmentally friendly," Sanford office administrator Jeni Winter explained in the article. "It uses no chemicals. It is a real alternative to chemical cleaning, so it is a process that is drawing a lot of interest." She told the newspaper only a few employees will be needed to begin with but …

The Georgia Economic Developers Association awarded Oconee and Athens-Clarke County officials during a conference in Savannah last week.
Since February's announcement of Caterpillar's investment in northeast Georgia, officials have been touting the intergovernmental corporation that took place between Oconee and Athens-Clarke counties and the City of Bogart in order to seal the deal. Now, the Georgia Economic Developers Association is recognizing those government bodies for “outstanding achievement in the location/expansion of business in Georgia." The award was given during the 49th Annual GEDA Conference held at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah Sept. 12-14. I'd also like to see a Capital One bank in Athens so I can use my Sony Playstation Card. (It's weird having a credit card that runs through a bank that isn't even local. On top of that, I keep getting mail from Capital One ANYWAYS for other things. I don't even own a Capital One bank account.
