The Dec. 10 Oconee County School Board meeting was the last for David Weeks and Mike Hunter.
Former members of the Oconee County Board of Education and retired Superintendent Dr. John Jackson Monday joined the current board in thanking Chairman David Weeks and Vice Chairman Mike Hunter for their years of service. Weeks first took a seat on the board on Jan. 1, 2005, and Hunter has served since since Jan. 1, 2009. Terms for both will end on Dec. 31, 2012. "Research on the characteristics of effective school boards point us to effective communication, focused action, long tenure and a climate of trust among stakeholders," remarked Superintendent Dr. Jason Branch. The Oconee County Board of Education unanimously approved a budget Monday for fiscal year 2013 that includes a millage rate increase and furlough days.
In record time, the Oconee County Board of Education convened Monday and passed a $53.2 million final budget for fiscal year 2013. All Board members were present, there was no discussion, and the vote was unanimous. The budget includes a property tax increase of 1 mil to 17.5 mils and two furlough days: Wednesday, Aug. 1 and Friday, March 29. The final budget remained unchanged from the tentative budget approved in mid-May, which was advertised for at least four weeks, Assistant Superintendent of Financial Operations Randy Morrison confirmed following the meeting. The Oconee County School Board chairman cites personal and business opportunities as reasons he won't run again.
David Weeks will not seek a third term on the Oconee County Board of Education. The current chairman says he wants more time to spend with his family and to invest in his businesses: "It kind of boils down to this -- when I first got on the board, I had one son and one restaurant. Now I have three sons and seven restaurants." All three of his boys -- ages 9, 7, and 4-- are playing sports, and it's becoming more of a challenge to support them and all of their activities, Weeks said. "My wife and I are committed to them and going to be there for them," he said. Granted, saving $9K on a budget of $53.2 million is nothing but symbolic, but by the same token, they could have claimed twice that amount for themselves and made exactly the same difference to the final budget figure: none.
