Mayoral Candidates Square Off at Forum

Candidates for Mayor of Watkinsville Dan Matthews and Charles Ivie discuss what they will do for voters and explain their vision for the future of the city at Thursday's forum held at the Oconee County Library.

Voters in Watkinsville will have their work cut out for them when it comes to selecting a mayor on Nov. 8. Local residents haven't had to choose between two candidates in more than 20 years, much less between candidates who fundamentally agree on a majority of issues concerning the city's future. For the most part, candidates Dan Matthews and Charles Ivie echoed one another on Thursday night as they answered questions generated from audience members at a public forum sponsored by The Oconee Enterprise at the Oconee County Library. Both Matthews and Ivie said they'd like to see communication strengthened between the city council and Oconee County Board of Commissioners, and support the widening of Simonton Bridge and Experiment Station …

Mayoral Candidate Dan Matthews Wants Watkinsville to Be 'A Destination"

Matthews, an office administrator and clerk for the Athens law firm of Eric K. Krasle & Associates, is running against Charles Ivie, a retiring sales manager, in the Nov. 8 election.

Oconee Patch presents a two-part series about the candidates running for the office of Mayor of Watkinsville.  Part one focused on Charles Ivie. Dan Matthews is featured in part two.   Dan Matthews lost his first major foray into politics running as a Democratic candidate for the State House this summer. Now he's setting his sites on the office of mayor for the city of Watkinsville. “We've come to a point in Watkinsville's evolution where I think we need to continue with strong leadership, someone who sees all sides of the issues, and is willing to work with everybody to make Watkinsville the best place it could possibly be for the 2,000-plus residents and people coming to the area,” Matthews said. “I think I can do that job and look …

Watkinsville Mayoral Candidate Charles Ivie Hopes to Give Back

Ivie, a salesman for Baldwin Filters, is running against Dan Matthews, who manages an Athens law firm and ran for State House District 113.

Oconee Patch presents a two-part series about the candidates running for the office of Mayor of Watkinsville.  Part one focuses on Charles Ivie. Look for part two, an interview with Dan Matthews, on Sept. 21 at 4:30 p.m.   Charles Ivie didn't expect to retire this year from a long sales career just to run for another full-time job as mayor of Watkinsville. But Ivie, 62, who has lived in Oconee County all his life, said it was perfect timing and something he's wanted to do to give back to the community that's been so good to him. “I was going to retire whether I ran for mayor or not,” Ivie said. “When I learned that (current) Mayor Joe Walter had planned not to offer for re-election, I said, 'OK, now's my opportunity,' so I qualified to run…

Here are some of the most read stories on Oconee County Patch this week:

Matthews, Williams Meet in Oconee for Political Debate

The top two vote getters in the House District 113 special election held a debate at the Oconee Civic Center Thursday to give residents of the district an opportunity to ask questions. A runoff election is set for July 19.

With a runoff election for House District 113 coming up July 19, the two remaining candidates met on stage for a political debate Thursday night at the Oconee Civic Center Theatre. Democrat Dan Matthews and Republican Chuck Williams took the stage to answer questions and discuss topics brought up by residents of the district. Here are a few of the things they discussed at the debate (responses have been paraphrased): Q: Chuck Williams, explain the failure of the North Georgia Bank under your watch. Chuck Williams: Community banks tend to mirror their local economies. When the US economy seized up, the demand for housing dried up overnight. Yes, our bank willingly made loans to builders and I take full responsibility for the failure of the …

Community-Oriented Matthews Hopes to Represent 'Mainstream'

Dan Matthews, a political junkie, sports fan and devoted father, is the only Democrat running in the June 21 State House election.

Leading up to the June 21 special election, Patch is profiling each of the candidates for the 113th District State House seat, which represents Oconee and part of Clarke County. Sarah Bell was profiled Tuesday. Look in the coming days for profiles of Alan Alexander and Chuck Williams. Dan Matthews is a legal secretary by day and a devoted father by night. He’s a Georgia Bulldogs fan and a political junkie who enjoys basketball and soccer. And now, he’s one thing more: the only Democratic candidate for the 113th District Georgia House of Representatives seat. Matthews, who had previously been serving as chairman of the Oconee County Democratic Committee, is one of four candidates running in the June 21 special election. “Dan as the chairman…
