The Pirate Carrying a Mermaid Optical Illusion has been named Patch's Halloween Costume in America. Its creator -- and wearer -- will receive a $5,000 prize for having the most creative and innovative costume.

Ashley Playford dressed up as a pirate carrying a mermaid this Halloween. Well, actually, she dressed up as the mermaid. Well...Her creativity has earned her the title of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America and a $5,000 grand prize. It was Playford's use of an optical illusion that won us over. Take a look at the photo she entered on Peekskill-Cortlandt Patch! Almost 4,000 Patch users entered the contest from Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, with costumes ranging from the Eiffel Tower and Honey Boo Boo to a flower pot and a clever interpretation of "binders full of women." While you could go to the pop-up Halloween store and rummage through whatever is left, we found some great costumes for all ages that will ensure a spooktacular Halloween. A Little Bearded Garden Gnome - Your kids may already have the clothes. You'll just need to make a simple hat and beard. Bag of Jelly Beans - You'll need a clear trash bag and set of strong lungs to make this sweet costume. Catch of the Day - This is a "reel" easy costume to put together. Quarterback - This punny costume is quick and easy to make. Spaghetti and Meatballs - Use a red and white tablecloth and a pot to make this saucy costume. Are their ghouls in your closets? How about pumpkins, superheros or mermaids? The Oconee County Library invites you to do some fall cleaning by recycling children's gently-used Halloween costumes. The concept: for every costume you bring, you can swap it for a different one, or you can simply donate costumes your family no longer needs. What do you think about the costume swap? Which kid in America has the most creative Halloween costume in the pumpkin patch? That's what we intend to find out with your photos and the help of celebrity judge Heidi Klum, who will select the Grand Prize winner. Patch will whisk the winner to New York or Los Angeles for a three-day, two-night trip for two that includes a meet and greet with Heidi, plus a donation of $1,031 to a local charity of the winner's choice. Nine runners up will also get a $1,031 donation from Patch to a local charity of their choice. Full contest rules are here.
