Bubber Wilkes Exits Commissioner's Race

Family and work must take priority, he tells the Oconee Enterprise.

Former Oconee County Commissioner Bubber Wilkes, a security officer at Athens Regional Medical Center, announced this week he will no longer seek the Post 4 seat on the Board, according to the Oconee Enterprise. Wilkes told the newspaper his wife's recent cancer diagnosis is one of the reasons it's not the best time for him to run for office. "I feel like I need to be with her rather than out campaigning and politicking," he told the newspaper. With Wilkes out, who are you supporting for Post 4? Tell us in the comments below. Retired Army Sergeant Major Mark Saxon and UGA Chief of Staff and Senior Director of Development Tammy Gilland declared their candidacy for Post 4 earlier in the year, and farmer and builder Travis Marshall has …

Will Melvin Davis Seek Re-election?

The current chairman of the Oconee County Board of Commissioners plans to make an announcement next month.

Melvin Davis, who has served as chairman of the Oconee County Board of Commissioners for 12 years, has yet to make an announcement about whether he plans to seek a fourth term. "I love what I do," he told Patch last week.  "I know it doesn't always make everyone happy." Davis is the current president of the Association County Commissioners of Georgia. If Davis seeks re-election, he will have opposition. Post 4 Commissioner Chuck Horton plans to run for chairman.  As commissioners, both Horton and Davis worked with other local and state officials to close the major economic development deal that is bringing a Caterpillar plant and thousands of jobs to the Oconee-Athens area. Sarah Bell, who lost to Davis in 2008 by about 100 votes, has also…

Mark Saxon is running for Post 4, The Oconee Enterprise reports.

He's never run for public office before, but Mark Saxon recently told The Oconee Enterprise, "I just feel it's the right time to commit." The retired Army sergeant major is running for Post 4 of the Board of Commissioners and says he has been paying attention to issues and wants to see an increase in construction in the county, the newspaper reports. Gilland Eyes Board of Commissioners for the Second Time

UGA employee Tammy Gilland plans to run for Post 4.

Tammy Gilland has announced her intention to run for a seat on the Oconee County Board of Commissioners. The UGA Chief of Staff and Senior Director of Development first ran in 2010 for Post 3 and lost to Margaret Hale.  Now she's taking a shot at Post 4, which will be vacant.  Chuck Horton, who currently occupies the post, told the ABH in November of 2010 he was interested in the position of chairman. “During my 2010 campaign, I had the opportunity to meet and listen to the citizens of Oconee County," Gilland said in a released statement. " I am still eager to offer my service on the Commission to encourage economic development and to provide Oconee County residents with the quality of services they expect and deserve." Gilland has served …
