UGA Provost Jere Morehead Named Sole Finalist for UGA Presidency

The Board of Regents will take final action on the selection at a future meeting.

From a press release put out by the Board of Regents: Board of Regents Chair “Dink” Nesmith and University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby have announced the name of the finalist for the University of Georgia presidency, Jere Morehead. Morehead is currently the senior vice president for Academic Affairs and provost at UGA. University of North Georgia Made Official with Regents' Final Approval

A celebration of the consolidation of North Georgia College & State University and Gainesville State College will be held in Oconee County and at each of the three other campuses Thursday.

The merger of North Georgia College & State University and Gainesville State College was made official Tuesday by a vote of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. The University of North Georgia is one of four newly created institutions resulting from consolidations recommended in 2011 by University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby with the goal of increasing college completion rates, broadening access to public higher education and maintaining affordability. Dr. Bonita Jacobs has been appointed president of the University of North Georgia. Townley Family Partnership Purchase of UGA Plant Sciences Farm Moves Forward

The University System of Georgia Board of Regents Tuesday approved the sale of the 522 acres in Oconee County, Ga. for $11.4 million.

University of Georgia scientists will continue their work at the Plant Sciences Farm in Oconee County until 2016, though the 522 acre-property on Snows Mill Road is changing hands. According to an article in the Athens Banner-Herald, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents Tuesday approved the sale of the land to the Townley Family Partnership and the agreement allows UGA to use the land rent free until 2016 to complete projects. Bids for the sale of the farm were collected around this time last year. UGA officials have said they plan to invest the money in other farms. Regents Approve Name for New Institution Created By GSU and NGCSU Merger

The new institution's mission statement has also been approved.

University of North Georgia has been selected by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents as the name for the new institution created by the merger of Gainesville State College and North Georgia College and State University. The name changes were the result of work on the four campuses to solicit suggestions and feedback from faculty, staff, students, alumni and the local community. The campus implementation teams then analyzed and tabulated the feedback to determine the recommended names that should be submitted to the regents for approval, according to Shelley Nickel, associate vice chancellor for Planning and Implementation. Schools Consolidation Plan Approved By Regents

The Board of Regents voted Tuesday to approve University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby’s recommendation to consolidate eight of the System’s 35 colleges and universities.

Over the next 12-18 months, Gainesville State College and North Georgia College & State University will be merged. On Tuesday, the Board of Regents approved University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby’s recommendation to consolidate the two along with Middle Georgia College and Macon State College; Waycross College and South Georgia College ; and Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University. “The Board’s approval now paves the way for us to proceed,” Huckaby said in a released statement. “We will focus on how these consolidations enable us to better serve our students and areas of the state more efficiently and effectively. Watkinsville's Gainesville State Campus Could be Part of Merger with North Georgia

Existing campuses would remain open, but there would be a possibility of some workforce reductions, according to the University System of Georgia.

Gainesville State College, which has a Watkinsville Campus, could be combined with North Georgia College and State University under a recommendation by University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby. “Our goal is a more educated Georgia, with a network of institutions that offer a range of needed degrees for 21st century demands,” Huckaby said in a released statement. “We are going to fulfill our mission within the limited resources available.” Combining schools would mean "increased administrative efficiencies and greater economies of scale through the creation of larger institutions better able to serve students," according to a news release. Huckaby Picked As Chancellor

Former Rep. Hank Huckaby will begin his duties as the 12th chancellor of the University System of Georgia on July 1.

Hank Huckaby has been named the next chancellor for the University System of Georgia.  The Board of Regents made the official announcement Friday morning following a special meeting via telephone conference.  He was named the only finalist two weeks ago. “I am especially appreciative of and honored by the action of the Board of Regents," Huckaby said in a news release. "I pledge to them my total support and commitment as together we work to meet the challenges and opportunities for the University System." Huckaby will officially take the reins as the 12th chancellor on July 1.  Chancellor Erroll Davis Jr. retires on June 30. The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia is expected to make an announcement about the new chancellor following a special called telephone conference this morning. See what else there is to know.

1. Deal Calls Special Election for House District 113

The Governor's announcement followed Hank Huckaby's resignation from the Georgia House of Representatives on Friday.

The following is a news release from the Office of the Governor: Gov. Nathan Deal today called a June 21 special election for House District 113, which includes all of Oconee County and portions of Oglethorpe, Clarke and Morgan counties. The vacancy arose upon the resignation of Hank Huckaby, whom the Board of Regents selected to serve as chancellor of the University System of Georgia. Huckaby served as one of the governor’s three floor leaders in the House. Jurisdiction for the election now moves to Secretary of State Brian Kemp.
