Melvin Davis on Wednesday announced a bid for a fourth term as Chairman of the Oconee County Board of Commissioners. Declared opponent Post 4 Commissioner Chuck Horton responded, "Let's tee it up and go."
UPDATE: On May 21, Sarah Bell announced she'll run for Post 1, a seat currently held by Jim Luke. Luke has said he'll run for re-election. Editor's Note: Sarah Bell has also indicated she'll run again for the seat, information which was mistakenly left off of the original article. It has since been added. For 12 years, Melvin Davis has served as chairman of the Oconee County Board of Commissioners, and Wednesday he announced that he'll run for another four-year term. "A lot of work has gone into getting us where we are today, even prior to my term as Commission chairman," he said. "We’re seeing the fruits of a lot of work, and I feel like this is a tremendous opportunity to continue the efforts in this direction." That direction, Davis …

The Board made no decision Tuesday whether to continue leasing the Courthouse Annex property or purchase it for $1 million.
The Oconee County Board of Commissioners took no action Tuesday regarding the Dolvin property located at 22 Main Street in Watkinsville. The county has the option to either renew the lease of the Courthouse Annex at a current price of $83,000 or purchase it for $1 million. At the meeting, Abe Abouhamdan, chair of the Land Use and Transportation Committee, reported to the Board that members of the committee had unanimously voted in favor of purchasing the property. Though all 9 members of the 14-member Committee who were present supported the purchase, they initially expressed concerns about how the public might perceive the price tag, Lee Becker reported in his Oconee County Observations blog on Monday. The property is currently valued …

Controversial "flyover" project among those chopped from the list.
The Oconee County Board of Commissioners approved an amended list of projects to be considered for construction with TSPLOST funds at their agenda-setting meeting Tuesday evening. At the top of the list, ranked by priority, are phases 1 through 3 of the Mars Hill Road/Experiment Station Road widening project. The construction, at a projected cost of more than $66 million, would expand the road to four lanes and include sidewalks and bicycle lanes. Chopped from the list were the proposed Daniells Bridge Road extension, known as the “flyover” during discussion, and the hefty $175 million proposal to expand and reconstruct the 2-lane segment of US 441 into four lanes. “Keep in mind this is our initial stab at a prioritization,” said County …

The Golden Pantry at Hodges Mill Road, among other properties, will have to be purchased as the Mars Hill widening project moves forward.
Construction won’t begin on the Mars Hill Road widening project until 2014, but Oconee County officials have a lot of work to do before they break ground. County officials have to turn over the rights of way for more than 100 properties to the Georgia Department of Transportation by June 2012 before construction firms can begin bidding on the long-awaited project. The first phase of the project to widen the corridor between State Route 316 and Main Street in Watkinsville will transform a three-mile section of Mars Hill Road from a two-lane road to a four-lane divided highway. In addition to securing rights of way for 98 properties, the county will also have to purchase four properties — including the Golden Pantry Food Store at Hodges Mill…

The Oconee County Board of Commissioners will consider an overhaul of the county's animal control ordinance; lower park rental rates are also on the table.
Oconee County citizens will get a chance to comment on a proposed animal control ordinance that will be presented to the Oconee County Board of Commissioners at their agenda-setting meeting Tuesday night. Sections of the current ordinance were adopted in 1987, with the most recent update made in May 2000. “We are totally revamping it,” said Animal Control Director Catlyn Vickers. “We are referencing a lot of state code in our new ordinance, and the public will be able to comment on it at the meeting.” Major changes to the ordinance include an increase in the fine structure, more classifications for aggressive animals, micro-chipping cats and dogs as they come into the facility at the owner’s expense, and extending the time that an owner …

The planned station at Highway 78 and Mars Hill Road could mean more options for Oconee drivers and more stress for its would-be competitor.
A gas station and convenience store chain is racing forward with plans to build a new location just south of State Route 316. The Oconee County Board of Commissioners could vote Feb. 8 on a variance request by RaceTrac Petroleum Inc., which plans to build an 18-pump gas station on the northeast corner of U.S. Highway 78 and Mars Hill Road. The project will likely move forward whether or not commissioners OK the request to decrease a county-mandated 50-foot buffer on the back of the gas station's property to 13 feet. The commissioners approved a rezoning request and a separate variance for the 2.371-acre property for RaceTrac last fall. This final variance, which was endorsed by Oconee County Planning Commission members in October, had been…
