The Gift That Keeps on Giving

Local residents give their time and donate blood to to help those in need.

January is National Blood Donor Month, and Oconee County residents are honoring that tradition by giving blood locally.  The East Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross has offices and blood donor centers all over Athens, including one not far from the Oconee/Clarke County line, in the Clarke Crossing Shopping Center on Timothy Road. Here's my account of what it is like to donate blood at the Clarke Crossing center. I was greeted with big smiles from the volunteers and by a nearly full waiting room. I sat down with Athens/Gainesville District Manager Judy Hall, who said that the presentation of donors in the waiting area was both expected and welcome. 1.  Give the Gift of Life!  The NE GA Chapter of the American Red Cross is continuing their special blood donor drive today due to an severe blood shortage in Georgia. Stop by the blood donor center at 3525 Atlanta Hwy in Athens. To make an appointment, call: 706-546-0681  or make an on-line appointment at your convenience.  All blood types are accepted. Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be at least 17 years old, healthy, and not taking antibiotics. Here's your quick roundup of what you need to know in Oconee County today.

1.  Oconee County students have another day home from school on day five of Snowpocalypse. The secondary roads remain too dangerous for the buses to risk travel. All extracurricular activities are cancelled, as well. No basketball today. An entire unscheduled week out of school may be of challenge for the school administrations as they figure out how to meet the required number of in-service days.
