Jacob Potter Wagner will spend 30 years in prison and serve 20 years on probation.
On May 10, 2012, a handyman entered a 73-year-old Oconee County woman's Peacock Drive home and bludgeoned her while she was in bed. One year to the day later, he pleaded guilty to the crime. In superior court Friday, Jacob Potter Wagner, now 23, changed his plea to guilty on three counts of aggravated battery, one count aggravated assault and one count burglary. A grand jury indicted Wagner on 10 counts, but per the negotiated plea agreement, a charge of criminal attempt to commit murder, an additional aggravated assault charge, two additional counts of burglary and a theft charge were dismissed. Another woman reportedly punched a store security guard when he confronted the two suspects Tuesday evening. An arrest doesn't mean a conviction.
An Athens woman accused of trying to steal less than $100 worth of clothing from Walmart on Epps Bridge Parkway is behind bars also facing a charge of aggravated assault for allegedly striking a customer twice with her getaway car. Oconee County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The woman who reportedly had been struck by the car was lying on the ground in the parking lot and her left leg was bleeding, according to an incident report. The injured woman, 38, told deputies she saw two women fighting with a store security guard outside and she tried to stop them. Two Walmart employees were injured during a confrontation with suspected shoplifters around noon last Wednesday at the store on Epps Bridge Parkway. According to an Oconee County Sheriff's Office incident report, a loss prevention officer told deputies he witnessed a man and a woman conceal three digital cameras and attempt to exit the store without paying for them. He said he and a second loss prevention officer approached the suspects and the male put up a struggle, biting him on his hand, leaving an open wound. An Oconee County man is behind bars on multiple charges stemming from an alleged domestic incident on Daniels Bridge Road last Thursday. The adult female victim told deputies she had been sleeping and was awakened to superglue being placed on part of her body, then choked and struck in the head with a golf club, according to an incident report. Deputies said they noticed bruising on her head and injuries to her arms. An employee was punched in the face by a 45-year-old grandmother when she tried to separate two other women who were fighting, according to reports. An arrest does not mean a conviction.
A quarrel broke out near the nail salon inside Walmart about 3 p.m. on Feb. 14 between two women who reportedly have children by the same father, according to an incident report on file at the Oconee County Sheriff's Office. A 25-year-old Athens woman told deputies she saw her son's 45-year-old grandmother at the nail salon and went to talk to her when she was forced to defend herself against a 30-year-old Crawford woman with whom she's had problems before. The owner of a BMW 720LI at a 1000 block Fox Hollow Court residence in Statham was surprised to wake up and discover that someone had removed his car's tires and wheels. The theft happened sometime between 12:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. on June 2, according to an incident report at the Oconee County Sheriff's Office, and the car was left on concrete blocks that the thief apparently brought to the scene.
