Authorities Friday evening combed the area of of the State Botanical Garden on South Milledge Avenue.
K-9 search teams from Oconee County Friday assisted University of Georgia Police in the hunt for an attempted rape suspect in Athens near the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. A man armed with a knife threatened to rape a woman as she walked on one of the trails but she was able to break free and seek help, the Athens Banner-Herald reported. The woman called UGA Police around 4:20 p.m. to report the incident, according to the newspaper. Shortly before 7 p.m., the Oconee County Sheriff's Office sent out a Nixle alert advising that K-9s were deployed and patrol deputies were assisting with the search. Athens Clarke County Police teamed up with Oconee County Sheriff's deputies and Watkinsville Police to capture Ray Lee McDaniel at a Woodside Place residence Tuesday afternoon.
The man Athens Clarke-County Police believe is responsible for robbing at knifepoint a clerk at the Golden Pantry on West Broad Street Saturday night for $232 was apprehended Tuesday afternoon in Oconee County. According to a post on the Oconee County Sheriff's Office's Facebook Page, 26-year-old Ray Lee McDaniel was taken into custody at a home on Woodside Place around 2:30 p.m. Deputies and officers from Watkinsville Police Department and Athens Clarke-County Police Department reportedly worked together to make the arrest. An investigation is underway into the death of a man who was struck and killed by a train Tuesday evening, Athens-Clarke police told the Athens Banner-Herald Wednesday. According to the newspaper's article, William Thomas, 51, was run over around 5:30 p.m. on the CSX railroad tracks in the vicinity of Cleveland Road. Thomas had an identification that listed a Watkinsville address, but also had ties to family member's residence close to the accident site in Clarke County, according to the article.

An Oconee County Sheriff's deputy assisted in rescuing a goat and Athens Clarke County Police stopped traffic while veterinary staff tended to a horse that fell out of a trailer.
It wasn't what he expected to encounter when he reported to duty, but during his shift Thursday, Deputy Josh Elrod of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office wound up with a goat in the back of his patrol truck. According to the Sheriff's Office's Facebook Page, Elrod and a Good Samaritan came to the aid of the goat on Ga. Highway 316 near McNutt Creek Road where she was wondering with a bucket stuck on her head. He transported the goat -- later identified as Rosie -- in his patrol car to a farm where a citizen had agreed to care for her until her owner was contacted. Glad to see this guy arrested. It's never enough however for the victim's family when the criminal has been arrested, there's always an anger that rages over that. I just hope people who shoot, kill, steal, etc. understand there's no gain when taking things that aren't yours.   more ›
