Antiques and Home Furnishings Shop is Owner's 'Lifelong Dream Come True'

Marilyn Forehand recently opened Marilyn's on Main in downtown Watkinsville

Marilyn Forehand's lifelong dream came to fruition when the doors of her antiques and home furnishings shop in downtown Watkinsville opened for the first time in April.  On May 2, she hosted a grand opening celebration that coincided with May's First Friday event. Here's what she had to say about her shop: Q. Why did you choose to sell antiques and home furnishings? A. My first job at 16 was in a home furnishings retail store, and I have been in love ever since.  As far as antiques,  I have always had an interest in "anything old."  Antiques tell history...I have always wondered what they would say if they could talk.  Q. Please describe your background with refurbishing furniture. A. I don't have any sort of trained background.  It is …

Meet The Owners of an Antiques and Treasures Shop

Countless unique items can be found at Attic Treasures.

Enjoy a treasure hunt?  Right in the heart of downtown Watkinsville you can wile away hours pouring over every inch of Attic Treasures.  Joann and Charles Stewart started small, but their business has taken off. Patch: When did you start your business?   Joann: Charles and I began our business in Madison (Morgan County) during the summer of 1988. Patch: Why this particular business? Joann: Our house got VERY FULL because A.) We're both packrats, B.) We enjoyed searching for interesting and unusual things, and C.) We had youngsters in the family who welcomed assistance with furnishing their new apartments, but who moved back home (more than once) and brought it all with them. (Did I mention the fact that the utility room was jammed? The …

Meet The Owner of an Art and Antiques Gallery

Dolores Schofill has quite an eye. She has a gallery full of beautiful treasures.

Dolores Schofill has created a gorgeous gallery featuring locally created art and furnishings, as well as some fantastic and unique antiques.  Her attention to detail and exquisite style makes Circa Antiques & Art one of Watkinsville's finest shops.   She has lovingly restored her building on Main Street, showcasing its architecture and vintage brick walls.  Her shop is a feast for the senses!  Patch: When did you start your business?  Dolores: I started my business in 2004 with "space" in Art Masters here in Watkinsville. I moved across the street and leased a building for 2 years, then I purchased a building two doors down, renovated it, and that's where I am now.  My business has evolved with each new location.  Patch: Why this …

House of Harmony

Feature Home: Scott & Charmayne, an Interesting Combination

Two households plus two newlyweds equals one happy home!

My clients Scott and Charmayne had both lived on their own for several years before they happily found each other and got married.    The wedding was lovely, the couple beautiful,  and the honeymoon romantic.  Once they were back home, two houses full of accumulated furniture and art had to be combined into one happy home.  In order to retain the wedded bliss, they enlisted my help! Scott had some great art work.  Collections of vintage black and white photos, nicely framed, of his home town of St. Simons Island, waterskiing competition photos, and lots of Bulldog memorabilia.  He also had some pretty good furniture to contribute including a few antique pieces. Charmayne had some nice art pieces as well, and a few more antiques inherited …

Featured Home: Sara L.

Sometimes client and designer can make a great team!

Sarah and I make a good team.  She loves to treasure hunt.  Antique shops, junk shops, booths, fairs and festivals…..she LOVES them.  She has a booth of her own in a nearby antique location, and her home is full of beautiful treasures.  Her problem is, once she gets her treasures home, she’s not sure what to do with them!  That’s where I come in. Interior Design can be taught in classrooms, but there are some things that can’t be taught and are instead developed.  I personally think everyone has their own set of gifts and one hopes those gifts blossom into something very enjoyable.  One of my gifts is putting stuff in its proper place and having a vision for unusual applications.  Shopping, however, is not something I enjoy.  I do shop, …

House of Harmony

Everything Old Is New Again

A repeating theme of late --reuse, recycle-- can also apply to your Oconee home decor.

Now you’re going to have that song on your mind all day, right?  I like the Anne Murray and The Muppets version! “Don't throw the past away You might need it some rainy day...” Not only is it fun to reuse some groovy object for something other than its original intent, it’s a great way to “recycle” or participate in “adaptive reuse.” I bet if you look around your house, dig through that pile of junk in your garage, or, better yet, go over to Grandaddy’s barn, you are going to find something just FABULOUS that has been sitting around gathering dust. When you look at it in a new light, it will be something you  just can’t live without for another second.  It will be a EUREKA moment for sure! My first experience with this came, like it does …
