An Athens man faces a charge of aggravated assault in Oconee County for allegedly pointing a handgun toward two men while driving along Ga. 316 Sunday evening. The two men, one from Madison and one from Watkinsville, told Oconee County Sheriff's deputies that around 6 p.m. they saw a man speeding east in a white Chevy Blazer on Ga. 316 near Pete Dickens Road. According to the incident report, the victims said the Blazer nearly struck them as it passed, and that it weaved in the roadway in front of them. Authorities are searching for a man they say assaulted an Athens-Clarke County police officer with a vehicle during the robbery of BP Gas Station at 4000 Lexington Road on April 18. There are active warrants in Rickie Korey "Woo" Powell's name for robbery by force, aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a police officer, and obstruction, police said, adding that Powell "should be considered violent and dangerous." According to a Nixle alert, Powell's last known address was Old Farmington Road in Bishop. An Athens woman accused of trying to steal less than $100 worth of clothing from Walmart on Epps Bridge Parkway is behind bars also facing a charge of aggravated assault for allegedly striking a customer twice with her getaway car. Oconee County Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The woman who reportedly had been struck by the car was lying on the ground in the parking lot and her left leg was bleeding, according to an incident report. The injured woman, 38, told deputies she saw two women fighting with a store security guard outside and she tried to stop them. A man authorities say was wanted for allegedly pulling a knife on a Walmart security guard Wednesday morning when he was confronted about shoplifting beer has been arrested. According to the Oconee County Sheriff's Office, a narcotics investigator helped to identify the suspect. The investigator showed a photo array to the store's personnel who also identified the suspect, said Chief Deputy Lee Weems, and an arrest warrant was obtained based on those statements and other evidence. For allegedly stabbing a man known to him, a 55-year-old Oconee County man faces a charge of aggravated assault. According to an incident report, Oconee County Sheriff's deputies were called to Pinewood Estates South mobile home park on Epps Bridge Road around 1:30 a.m. on July 28 where a man in his 50s had reportedly been stabbed by a man he knew. The victim was transported by EMS to an area hospital with one non-life threatening stab wound to the abdomen, Sheriff Scott Berry said. Deputies met with Billy Joe Furr who admitted to having had an argument with the injured man. James Erik Hester faces formal charges in connection with the alleged incident August 21, 2011 on Watson Springs Road.
An Oconee County grand jury has handed down a 10-count indictment against a local man accused of assaulting his brother-in-law with a knife, threatening to kill him and three other family members last summer. James Erik Hester, 33, has been indicted on the charges of aggravated assault, four counts of terroristic threats and acts, and two counts of battery. The alleged incident took place in the evening of August 21, 2011 at a home in the 1100 block of Watson Springs Road. Hester was hospitalized for treatment of a single, non-life threatening gunshot to the abdomen, after authorities said he was shot by his brother-in-law as an act of self-defense. The 64-year-old Bishop resident was tased and taken into custody after a domestic dispute escalated Sunday, according to reports.
Oconee County deputies say they arrested a 64-year-old Bishop man on one count of aggravated assault after he allegedly fired a .22 handgun toward the direction of his son, the son's pregnant girlfriend and her mother as the women attempted to leave the residential property Sunday evening. An Athens man was stabbed in the hand and shoulder during an altercation around 9:15 p.m Tuesday near the Arbor Express convenience store on Old Macon Highway, authorities reported. The fight broke out on private property along the bank on the Oconee side of the Oconee River, said Lee Weems, chief deputy of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office, in an email. Mark Andrew Maxey is to spend two years in prison and 10 years on probation.
Judge David Sweat sentenced Mark Andrew Maxey to two years behind bars and 10 years probation for his aggravated assault conviction, said Clerk of Superior Court Angela Watson. She said Maxey received 12 months imprisonment for both cruelty to children and stalking, to be served concurrent with the aggravated assault prison time. The sentencing took place Tuesday at Oconee County Courthouse.
