More than 31,000 items were collected during the Oconee County Schools two-week Can-A-Thon.
The Food Bank at Area Churches Together Serving (ACTS) is in good shape this holiday season, thanks in part to recent donations from local schools' Can-A-Thons. During a two-week drive at Oconee County Schools, 31,501 items were collected. Additionally $2,715 was raised between the two high schools. The money will be used to purchase rice, spaghetti, flour, corn meal, grits, oil, toilet paper, soap and other necessities. ACTS Chairman Reiny Hiss estimates another 4,000 cans were collected recently by Prince Avenue Christian School. Clothing donations have also been "phenomenal," according to Hiss. Volunteers were busy sorting donated food items on Friday at Area Churches Together Serving.
A record number of canned food items were collected and monetary donations raised through this year's Can-A-Thon, sponsored by Oconee County Schools, according to a Weekly Update email sent by Superintendent John Jackson on Friday. Over 31,000 items were donated along with more than $3,500 in cash during the two-week benefit for the Area Churches Together Serving Food Bank. "Your overwhelming generosity will help struggling families have a brighter and merrier holiday season as well as help ACTS meet other needs throughout the year," Jackson wrote in the email. In an effort to stock the Area Churches Together Serving (ACTS) Food Bank, the Westminster Christian Academy girls volleyball team held a canned food drive on Oct. 7. ACTS leaders told The Oconee Enterprise at the end of September that the Food Bank has been experiencing a shortage at a time when more Oconee County families are in need of its services. According to the school's website, the team was able to deliver 1,352 cans of food to ACTS. Team members also volunteered their time to gather boxes of food for needy families, the website noted. On Oct. 29, Boy Scout Troop 149 held a food drive for ACTS at Butler's Crossing Shopping Center.

A local Boy Scout Troop has planned a service project to collect much-needed donations for the Area Churches Together Serving (ACTS) Food Bank. The Food Bank' shortage comes at a time when more Oconee County families are in need of its services, The Oconee Enterprise reported. ACTS Chairman Reiny Hiss has made an appeal to churches and the community for an increase in donations, according to the newspaper's article. On June 17, the Oconee Lions Club donated $1,000 to the Area Churches Together Serving (ACTS) Food Bank. ACTS, a ministry of Oconee County Churches, supplies individuals who qualify with food and clothing. The ACTS distribution center is located at 130 E. Thompson Street in Bogart and is open on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
