Volunteer for the 9-11 Day of Service and Remembrance

HandsOn Northeast Georgia has organized four projects in commemoration of September 11, including the beautification of the 9-11 memorial and flagpole at an Oconee County, Ga. fire department.

The following is an edited news release from the Athens Community Council on Aging: In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a "National Day of Service and Remembrance" to honor the victims, survivors, and families of 9/11 through service-oriented programs.  “I will” became the mantra – a call to action to inspire Americans to remember by doing, to focus on the sense of solidarity that united us after the tragedy, and to turn a day of loss into a collective of positive acts.  People across the country may participate not only through volunteerism and service but by simple, personal acts of good – as easy as a hug or as dedicated as serving a meal at a shelter. The 9/11 Day of Service has come to symbolize the culmination of our …

How Will You Remember the September 11 Attacks?

With the 11-year anniversary of the attacks on Tuesday, what are you planning to do to remember that day?

Tuesday is the 11-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks that brought down the World Trade Center in New York City and damaged the Pentagon.  Ceremonies are scheduled nationally and locally to remember the day, honor the victims and celebrate the actions of Americans in the aftermath of the attacks. But now that it's more than 10 years since the attacks, there is a quieter approach to the anniversary. Those in public safety, however, will never forget. Saturday morning, firefighters participated in the Dunwoody Manhattan Memorial Climb at The Manhattan Condominiums. State Rep. Tom Kirby said this is an annual event, started last year by a career Dekalb County firefighter, to honor the fallen heroes on 9/11. Capt. Patrick Lindstrom had …

Oconee County Remembers 9/11

Soldiers, first responders, and citizens gathered at Oconee Veterans Park for a special 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday.

A 52”x18”x18", 923-pound section of steel beam from the World Trade Center displayed on a sheet of red velvet and surrounded by memorial flowers was the center of a Remembrance Ceremony at Oconee Veterans Park Sunday that commemorated the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Hundreds of citizens, members of the military, police, fire, and emergency personnel collectively prayed for the loved ones lost on that tragic day and acknowledged the countless sacrifices that have been made over the last decade.  "Since 9/11, more of our citizens have been killed in action protecting our freedoms than died on 9/11," remarked Melvin Davis, chairman of the Oconee County Board of Commissioners. "Thank God for those men and women who've …

In Post 9/11 World, Oconee Soldier's Family Always on Guard

Nearly a decade later, Lt. Col. John Gentry and his family feel the impact of 9/11.

Katherine Gentry cherishes the days when her husband, National Guard Lt. Col. John Gentry, is around to bond with her and watch their two children grow and play. She knew being married to a guardsmen meant he'd be called to serve his country and wouldn't always be at home. Ten years ago, she would never have predicted how many times Uncle Sam would come calling. In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the ensuing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Gentry, was deployed not once, but three times. In 2003, he was sent to North Carolina to support security efforts outside of two military bases. In 2005, he was sent to Iraq to identify enemy targets as a field artillery officer, and in 2009 was stationed in Afghanistan where…
