Drivers Shouldn't See Spike in Gas Prices Over Memorial Day Weekend

A AAA spokeswoman said drivers shouldn't see increases in prices at the pumps — find out the cheapest places to fill up in Oconee.

Some good news for Oconee County residents who plan to travel this Memorial Day weekend — according to AAA, The Auto Club Group, drivers shouldn't see increases in gas prices.  “People who plan to enjoy Memorial Day weekend will likely see stable prices at the pump and shouldn’t expect prices to spike, barring any unforeseen events that endanger fuel supplies," Jessica Brady, AAA spokeswoman, said in a news release. “Although gas prices are nearing year-ago levels, they are not expected to deter holiday travelers from enjoying the three-day weekend.” According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Georgia was $3.45 going into this week, up just a cent from $3.44 the previous week. Over $115,000 Collected During 2013 Oconee County Relay for Life

Forty-two teams and 536 participants came together Saturday to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society.

Hundreds gathered at North Oconee High School Saturday to remember loved ones who've lost their lives to cancers, to honor survivors who continue their battles, and to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society. The event netted a whopping $115,390.15, and the Oconee County Relay website states that number may not yet reflect all of the donations. "Thank you to our wonderful community," was the message posted to the Oconee County Relay Facebook Page on Sunday. "We had a great Relay For Life!" Heaton Ordered To Keep Ankle Monitor, Remain in Oconee County

A Clarke County judge rejected a request from William Wilson Heaton to remove his ankle monitor and move to Bartow County.

A Clarke County judge has rejected a petition from the man accused of running over Emily Bowman in a hit-and-run accident to remove his ankle monitor and leave Oconee County.  A judge last week denied William Wilson Heaton's request to remove the monitor and move to Bartow County with his grandfather, according to WSBTV. The news agency reported Heaton made the request so he could work in order to pay for his legal expenses. He must remain in Oconee County with his mother. Bowman, a former Kennesaw State University student and Woodstock High School graduate, was hospitalized in critical condition at Athens Regional Medical Center between Feb. 16 and March 8 when she was hit by a pick-up truck as she and a friend walked along Oak Street.  …

Should the Drunken Driving Limit Be Lowered?

The federal government is proposing a drop to a .05 percent blood-alcohol level.

The National Transportation Safety Board wants to reduce deaths caused by drunken drivers, and one of its ideas is to change how states measure drunkenness. The board has proposed reducing the blood-alochol limit to .05 percent, down from the .08 percent states enforce now, according to Fox News. That limit could mean one drink for a lot of women, and two drinks for a lot of men. "Our goal is to get to zero deaths because each alcohol-impaired death is preventable," NTSB Chairman Deborah Hersman said in the Fox story. Among those who oppose the idea: Groups that sell alcohol. "Moving from 0.08 to 0.05 would criminalize perfectly responsible behavior," American Beverage Institute Managing Director Sarah Longwell said in a statement quoted …

there are too many loop holes for peoplethat get busted dui. lawyers getting rich getting people's charges dropped, then they think they can do it all they want cuz they will just breeze through court again. let's fix the loop holes then worry about 0.05 or 0.08.
