Oconee County High School freshman Ryan Alexander King of Bishop died on Tuesday, May 14 at age 14. "We did have a student pass away suddenly," Oconee County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jason Branch said. "We've asked for additional counselors to be on site for support as needed. We want to make sure the students, faculty and family are cared for." According to his obituary, Ryan played on soccer teams for Athens United and the Oconee County Warriors. The community is invited to Athens Academy's Spartan Center to remember the teen who touched so many lives.
A community-wide celebration to remember Kajal Patel, the vibrant Athens Academy seventh grader who passed away on Monday, will be held on Sunday, March 3. The service will take place at 2 p.m. inside the Spartan Center and attendees are asked to wear red in honor of Kajal. Donations in Kajal's memory may be made to the Be A Hero For Kajal fund at Athens First Bank and Trust or sent by mail to PO Box 647, Watkinsville, GA 30677. The fund will be used for programs created in Kajal's name which will aim to develop service and leadership in students, according to the Be a Hero for Kajal Facebook Page.

The Athens Academy community is grieving the loss of one of its own. After suffering much of her life from an immune disorder, seventh grader Kajal Patel has died. Headmaster Bob Chambers on Monday told parents about the news in an email. It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Kajal Patel, Class of 2018. While aiding a woman whose car broke down in the travel lane on SR 10 Loop late last Thursday night, Lilly was struck and killed by another car. The Athens Banner Herald is reporting the death of 50-year-old Julie L. Cannon of Watkinsville. MacGregor Literary agency owner Chip MacGregor told the newspaper the author passed away in her sleep Tuesday. Cannon has authored six novels including "Truelove & Homegrown Tomatoes," "Those Pearly Gates" and, most recently, "Twang." As news of Cannon's death spread to her fans, her Facebook page began filling with messages. One fan wrote, "My heart is breaking over the sudden passing of Julie L Cannon. What a great southern author. If you have never read 'Mater Biscuit, then you should. This book made me laugh and cry. RIP Julie." Funeral arrangements were not immediately available. Funeral arrangements have been announced for UGA student Quinton Million Ayers, 22. Ayers grew up in Adairsville but most recently resided in Oconee County. Gwinnett County Police said Ayers died from injuries sustained in a one-vehicle accident that likely occurred Saturday morning on Ga. Highway 316 near Harbins Road. His family had reported him missing on Sunday and his body was found in his truck on Labor Day. Conrad Fink, who joined the faculty of the Grady College in 1983, died Saturday after a recurrence of prostate cancer. He was 80 and had worked as a foreign correspondent and executive with the Associated Press before joining the UGA faculty. "He put up a good battle with cancer for many many years, he kept himself in as good shape as he could. He told me he was going to teach absolutely for as long as he could, and I guess he did," said Al Hester, a retired Grady professor.
