"Concerning Removing Nuisance Wildlife As In Any Other Occupation, You Get What You Pay For"

For the Deer, Turkey and Rabbit hunters, I would like to offer some suggestions if you are seriously considering beginning a Predator Control Program on your lease. In the last article, I gave some tips on how a club can budget it's money in order to hire a Trapper or Wildlife Operator to remove Coyotes and Bobcats from your property. These are the two predators that do the most damage to the fawn population as well as the adult deer. Remember as I said, Coyotes eat your deer, turkey and rabbits 365 days per year.....not just during fawn birthing season.
Concerning Trappers, there are two basic types.
   1. The Fur Trapper who traps for the pelts. He makes money from these so many times you will hear them say, " I won't charge you anything, I trap for the fur. Russia, China, Asia, Europe all have a very high demand for prime American furbearers whose pelts they use in their fashion industry.
   2. Certified Nuisance Wildlife Trappers target specific animals that have become a nuisance or danger to Livestock, Pets, other Wildlife or Humans. They are paid for the scouting, setting and maintaining of the trapline for typically a two week period. They target one species and release any other animals caught in their traps.
The Fur Trapper is far and above the most numerous one of the three. The more animals he traps, the more money he makes. He traps mostly during the season in the winter and sets for numerous species at one time. He does not target just one animal. When considering what type of trapper to hire to remove coyotes from your property or lease you would do well to hire the ADC Trapper instead of the Fur Trapper. Here's why.
The coat of a furbearer primes in the cold of winter. What that means is that the quality of the fur is at it's peak and will bring the most money at the NAFA auction then. That is why most furbearer seasons are set during the winter. During the spring and summer, coyotes and bobcats develop sarcoptic mange, rub their fur and it is not suitable for sale at auction. Mange is a parasitic disease that causes the hair to fall out and incessant itching of the skin. The animal, unless he is trapped out usually dies a slow, agonizing death. All fur brings different levels of pricing at auction depending on the species. In the East, Bobcats are the high dollar furbearers as well as mink, red fox and gray fox. Coyotes are typically at the bottom of the list in fur quality and pricing. The fur trapper knows this and if you hire him to set your property, he will say that he is trapping for coyotes, but you can darn well believe he has sets out for bobcat, reds and grays. In other words, unlike the ADC trapper, he is not targeting one species. The ADC Trapper, on the other hand, will only target nuisance animals. He is being paid for the work he does as stated above. He is an Expert in Trapping the Predators because he spends so much time studying the animals, tracking him, learning his habits and dedicating his trap line to just this species. 95% of the animals I trap are Coyotes. They are my passion. I have no desire to be a Fur Trapper. I love the challenge of learning all I can about Canis latrans lupus. He intrigues me. It is like a game of chess for the Coyote is the most intelligent and adaptable predator. And unlike the Fur Trapper, I RELEASE approximately 97% of the non target animals I may catch unharmed. My profession is a Business, whereas, the Fur Trappers' is a hobby alot of the time. I have fuel costs, expendables, lure and bait costs and my time scouting, setting the traps and checking the line. Let me be clear that I do not mean to show the Fur Trapper in a negative light at all. It is just two different perspectives, but One Brotherhood. We are all Trappers. We all remove a certain number of animals from the populations to keep them healthy, to keep disease from breaking out. The Fur Trapper provides a needed service and highly desired commodity in the Global economy. We are both necessary in the whole scheme of things. I encourage you to think about what I have said above. By managing the wildlife populations, and keeping the predators in check, we help maintain a healthy balance of the fragile Ecosystems. But personally, if I were going to consider hiring a Trapper to remove coyotes off of my deer, turkey and rabbit lease, it would without a doubt be the Professional ADC Trapper. By being Certified thru the State, he has shown that he is more serious about his profession. He has taken that extra step to study and learn more about the animals that become a Nuisance and who are Vectors for disease. He is a Businessman. If he is a Prudent businessman, he will incorporate his business and carry General Liability Insurance. He has built his business and invested countless hours in doing so.  He will help you set up a Predator Control Program for your property that will benefit you and your members for many years to come. He understand the consequences of not trapping; the hundreds of millions of dollars each year of economic and environmental damage that these animals can cause. So, in this aspect of life as any other, you get what you pay for. Remember, ADC trappers target specific predators and animals and they release all non target animals back into the wild as long as they are healthy to do so.
