The last weekend before UGA resumes classes is packed with possibilities!

Friday, January 3rd

Journey to the Stars at Sandy Creek Nature Center. The Athens-Clarke County Department of Leisure Services will present Journey through the Stars for families in the new Sky Center where they will explore the great beyond and share a different aspect of astronomy. This session is called "A Planet for Goldilocks" and runs from 3 p.m. - 4 p.m. at Sandy Creek Nature Center. Call (706) 613-3615 to register. 

Jonathan Byrd plays at Hendershot’s Coffee Bar at 7pm. Said to be one of his generation’s best songwriters/storytellers and performers, Jonathan and his amazing band will be here live with Adam Klein opening. North Carolina picker, Texas songwriter.

Saturday, January 4th

From 10 to 11am, there’s a walk at Sandy Creek Nature Center. Sandy Creek Nature Center Naturalists will lead a hike around the property in search of seasonal happenings. Participants are encouraged to bring a camera and binoculars. The program takes place on Saturday, 1/4/14, from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.

OCAF Annual Thrift Sale, Donation Kickoff Party, 9am to 2pm. The Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation is kicking off its drive for items for its annual thrift sale. Bring your surplus furniture, antiques, working vehicles, fitness equipment, electronics, small appliances, lawn and garden supplies, books, toys, clothes, etc. Donations are tax deductible and all proceeds support OCAF in its mission to bring arts and art education to NE GA. After donating, enjoy popcorn and a bowl of chili. Donations can be dropped off at 34 School Street (Rocket Hall) in downtown Watkinsville on Saturdays from 10-2pm until March 7th. Don’t forget to Bring One for the Chipper and recycle your naked Christmas tree at Cofer's on Mitchell Bridge Road beginning at 9am. You’ll get a seedling in return. For more information about where to drop off your tree, click here.

At 4pm, the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia, in partnership with the Ga. Links, is having a Zumba-thon in the multipurpose room of the Butts-Mehre Building to raise money for Food 2 Kids. Come exercise, have fun and help those in need.

The Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission will be at Harris Shoals Park in Watkinsville, from 9 am to 4 pm, to help you recycle your used Christmas trees. In exchange for your used tree, you will receive a free seedling to plant, courtesy of the Oconee Lions Club.  If you can’t make it to the park on Saturday, you can drop off your tree at Harris Shoals Park or at any of the Oconee County Recycling Collection Sites (during operating hours only). Look for the signs. Also, if you're disabled, a senior citizen or a veteran, please contact KOCBC's new partner Junk South for assistance with removal of your used Christmas tree: 855-RIP-JUNK or info@junksouth.com

At 7:15pm is the First Saturday Contra Dance sponsored by the Athens Folk Music and Dance Society at Lay Park. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for students with ID, and $5 for children under 15 years old. The dance starts at 7:30 and ends at 10:30 pm. The dances are taught and called while the musicians fiddle and strum and provide the beat for the dancers. There's an introductory lesson at 7:15 for new dancers or folks looking for a refresher course.

Sunday, January 5th

The Solstice Sisters are playing at the Athens Clarke County Library, beginning at 3pm. Come here these wonderful, versatile musicians! They will be Live! at the Library.
