Volunteer for the 9-11 Day of Service and Remembrance

The following is an edited news release from the Athens Community Council on Aging:

In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a "National Day of Service and Remembrance" to honor the victims, survivors, and families of 9/11 through service-oriented programs.

 “I will” became the mantra – a call to action to inspire Americans to remember by doing, to focus on the sense of solidarity that united us after the tragedy, and to turn a day of loss into a collective of positive acts.  People across the country may participate not only through volunteerism and service but by simple, personal acts of good – as easy as a hug or as dedicated as serving a meal at a shelter.

The 9/11 Day of Service has come to symbolize the culmination of our nation's enduring unity, engaging millions of volunteers and communities each year.

HandsOn Northeast Georgia and RSVP at the Athens Community Council on Aging (ACCA) are partnering to bring the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance to Northeast Georgia.  Join the millions of Americans who will serve this September 11th by engaging in one of the following local initiatives benefiting veterans, military families and local public safety officers.  Follow the links below to learn more about each project and to register.

• Assist the Athens-Clarke County Police Department in the Forensics, Domestic Violence, and Crime Prevention Units.
• Get your hands dirty on a beautification project with the Oconee County Fire Department and the 9/11 Memorial at Station 8.
• Donate personal care items for the Northeast Georgia Homeless Veterans Shelter.
• Write a letter to military personnel through Operation Gratitude.
• …Or get creative and tweet your own “I Will” service pledge using the hash tag #911day.

Donations and letters may be dropped off at Community Connection on 1865 W.
