High School Football Playoffs: Wolverines Topple Spartans

With the win over Athens Academy, Prince Avenue Christian School advances to round 3.

Oconee County Region 8-A rivals met for the second time this season Friday night. The Athens Academy Spartans battled the Prince Avenue Christian School Wolverines for a spot in next week's round 3 of the playoffs.

The Spartans saw their perfect season come to an end, as the Wolverines scored one of the night's biggest upsets. The Wolverines took a 14-7 lead into the locker room at halftime. They played well on both sides of the football in the second half.

Athens Academy had no more successful scoring drives while Prince Avenue tacked on a field goal in the 3rd quarter and a touchdown in the 4th.

The final score was Athens Academy 7, Prince Avenue 24.

It was also a great night for Monroe's playoff teams.

From the onset, there was never any doubt in either game as to who would win. The Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes advance to the State Semi-finals for Division AAAA with a resounding 47-8 win over the South Effingham Mustangs. The 'Canes showed Cat 5 strength early, scoring 31 of those points in the first half. Solid defense throughout the game kept Mustangs at bay, allowing only 8 points very late in the game.

The George Walton Academy Bulldogs fared just as well tonight. They travelled to Marietta to face the Walker School Wolverines in Division A (Private) round 2 action. The Bulldogs took a commanding 30-0 lead into halftime, then tacked on another touchdown early in the 3rd quarter. The Bulldog defense allowed only one scoring drive the entire game, a touchdown late in the game. The Bulldogs take a 37-7 win and will advance to the next round.
