Oconee Co. High Downs Walnut Grove

Warrior tennis remained unbeaten in region play Tuesday with convincing wins from both girls' and boys' teams at home against the Walnut Grove Warriors.

The girls extended their region record to a perfect 9-0 and 11-2 overall. The Lady Warriors won at all five positions to blank the visiting Lady Warrior squad 5-0. Jordan England, won over Deidre Corbin at number one singles 6-2, 6-3. Katy Kane easily downed Taylor Bussie at the two slot 6-0, 6-0 at number two, while Caroline McElhannon won over Tyler Calhoun 6-1, 6-0 in the three spot. In doubles, the number one doubles team of Kimberly Case and Macy Bird won by a score of 6-3, 6-2 over the Walnut Grove combo of Jade Bridges and Katie Bowers. Ivy Do and Megan Morris defeated Brooke Lelenske and Rylee Harris 6-0, 6-0 to complete he match sweep for OCHS.

The OCHS Warrior boys' team also won at all five positions to cruise past the visiting Walnut Grove Warriors 5-0.  The Warriors lost only two games overall enroute to their 9th region win. The win kept the Warriors unbeaten in region play and improved their overall record to 12-1.

Sam Ondo and Will McDonald both won by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores at the one and two positions over Aaron Garcia and Josh Ellington respectively, while Conner Smith also breezed to an easy victory over Tyler Moore by posting a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win at the three slot. Both Oconee doubles teams won 6-0, 6-0. The number one doubles team of Hunter Pritchard and Drew Horsely defeated the Walnut Grove tandem of Matt Mallory and Austin Sutherland. Meanwhile, at number two doubles, Zach Miner and Dan Madden dispensed Corey Lockridge and Myles Tate.

"As a team, all of our players have continued to improve each week," Coach Dan Gruetter said following the match. "We try to remind our players that tennis is an '85-15' game. Eighty-five percent of the time, you win the point because your opponent does something to lose it and win you the point. Fifteen percent of the time, you in the point because of something you did to win it."

The Warriors travel to Gainesville Thursday for a key region showdown.
