Titans Beat Spartans

Next, Athens Academy will play George Walton Academy in Monroe on March 22 and North Oconee tennis teams will visit Jackson County on March 27.

The boys' and girls' tennis teams downed on Tuesday at the Titan tennis courts.  The 11-2 Lady Titans bested the Lady Spartans 4-1, winning at all positions except No. 2 doubles.  Becca Bruning led the charge, defeating Caroline Doherty 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.  At No. 2 Amber Hudson downed Rhea Chatterjee 6-0, 6-1, and at No. 3 Mary Campbell Cobb beat Melissa Corry 6-2, 6-2.  In No. 1 doubles action, Alex Barone and Abby Bruning upended Anna Justice and Conley Messer 6-3, 6-2.  But at No. 2 doubles Lana Livesay and Cammi Shaffer lost a close one to the Lady Spartans' duo of Elizabeth Sinyard and Dakota WIlliams 7-5, 3-6, 6-10 (tiebreak).

For the 11-2 Titans, Peter Bertran downed Kevin Dong 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1.  Sophomore Ray Donovan was a winner over Houston Gaines at No. 2 6-3, 6-1.  The lone Spartan victory came at No. 3 singles where Danny Sullivan got past Titan senior Kerry Nozum 7-5, 6-2.  At No. 1 doubles, the undefeated North Oconee tandem of Seth Taylor and Jeff Bautista bested T.J. Sterrenberg and Nathan Iyer 6-2, 6-0.  At No. 2 Stevie Hemerlein and David Sloan got past Will Seagraves and Hayden Lanzilotta 6-3, 6-4.

Next week the Titans visit Jackson County on March 27 in a Region 8-AA match, then travel to Gwinnett County to take on Providence Christian Academy at Collins Hill Athletic Club on March 29.  Both matches are scheduled to start at 4:30.  Athens Academy will play George Walton Academy in Monroe on Thursday, March 22.
