Oconee County Area Sports Calendar

A recap of last week's local sports action and a preview of games for this week.

Here is this week's Oconee County sports wrap-up for the week ending on Feb 13. We also take a look at upcoming games, matches, and meets for this week.

BASEBALL

The baseball team will begin their season at cross-county rival on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

BASKETBALL

The Oconee County High School girls' basketball team finished their regular season with a 48-30 win over Monroe Area last Wednesday. The Lady Warriors finished the regular season at 15-10 0verall and 8-4 in Region 8B AAA play. They will begin tournament play in the Region 8AAA Tournament this week. Day and time to be announced.

The Oconee County boys' basketball squad dropped their final game of the regular season to Monroe Area last Wednesday by a score of 63-37. The Warriors ended the regular season with a 4-19 overall mark and 1-9 in Region 8B-AAA play. They will try to bounce back in the Region 8AA Tournament this week.  Date and time to be determined. 

The North Oconee girls' basketball team finished the regular season at 19-6 overall and 9-3 in Region 8B-AA last Friday night with a 57-31 win over East Jackson. The Lady Titans will now begin their drive to a state championship when they begin play this week in the 8AA Region Tournament at Hart County. Tip-off time to be announced.

The North Oconee boys' basketball team finished their regular season Saturday night with a 55-35 win over Oglethorpe County. The Titans enter this week's Region 8AA Tournament with an overall record of 9-17 and 4-9 in Region 8B-AA. Day and time of game to be announced.  

The girls' varsity basketball team of Prince Avenue Christian School fell to Hebron Christian Academy 44-34 in their final regular season game Friday night. However, the Lady Wolverines go into this week's Region 8A Tournament with an overall record of 16-7 and 10-4 in Region 8B-A play. They will begin this week's 8A Region Tournament at Hart County. Day and time to be determined.

The boys' varsity basketball team of defeated John Hancock 54-52 in the consolation round of the GISA Region 1-A Tournament. The Lions (7-15) will begin play this week in the GISA Class A State Tournament. Day and time to be determined.  

SOCCER

The Oconee County girls' and boys' varsity soccer teams will begin their regular seasons this week. The Lady Warriors will host cross-county rivals North Oconee Wednesday night at 6 p.m. The boys will head to Mill Creek for a scrimmage match with the Hawks on Friday at 5:30 p.m. before starting the regular season on the following Wednesday at Brookwood.

The North Oconee High School girls' and boys' soccer team will begin their seasons this evening at Apalachee. Kickoff time for the girls' game is 5 p.m., and the boys' game will start at 7 p.m..  The Titans and Lady Titans will also be in action this Thursday at Cedar Shoals. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m., followed by the North Oconee boys' match against the Jaguars at 7 p.m.    

SWIMMING

The North Oconee High School girls' and boys' swim teams turned in solid performances Saturday at the GHSA Class A-AAAA State Swim Meet. The girls finished in 12th place and the boys finished 18th in the A-AAAA competition.  Both squads finished 3rd in the state among all AA schools.    

TENNIS

The Prince Avenue Christian girls' tennis team will take on Athens Academy this afternoon at 4 p.m. at George Walton Academy.    

North Oconee High School boys' and girls' tennis teams meet Grayson Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.  This is a make-up match from last Thursday's snow day.  Both teams host Mill Creek at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Feb.17.

WRESTLING  

The Oconee County High School varsity wrestling team qualified 8 wrestlers for this week's AAA State Tournament to be held at the Gwinnett Arena Feb. 17-19. Johny Miller (135 lb.) and Cody Knight (160 lb.) were Sectional Champions in their divisions. Jake Hodges (130 lb.) and Ethan Griffith (140 lb.) finished in third place in their classes. Marshall Brown (103 lb.) and John Huff (189 lb.) wrapped up fifth place. Jason Miller (125 lb.) and Chris Allen (285 lb.) captured sixth place in their respective divisions, and Cory Collins finished in ninth place in the 119 lb. weight class. (The ninth place finisher is an alternate for the state tournament if one of the 8 cannot wrestle).
