Locals Come in Top Eight at World Championships in Athletics
Adam Nelson of Watkinsville, and Reese Hofa of Athens placed in the World Championships in Athletics this week in Daegu, South Korea representing the United States in men's shot put.
Watkinsville resident Adam Nelson and Reese Hoffa of Athens, both competed and placed in the men's shot put at the World Championships in Athletics held in Daegu, South Korea, according to a release from USA Track & Field.
Nelson and Hoffa were among two others on the United States team who came in the top eight at the final, however none of them were able to win a gold medal. According to USA Track & Field, it was the first time in three years an American hadn't won gold.
Hoffa started out in first place at the competition with a throw of 20.90meters, or 68 feet, 7 inches. Even though he improved with another toss of 68 feet, 10.5 inches on his second throw, he came up short on his others and fell into fifth place, according to the release.

Nelson came in eighth after throwing 20.29 meters of 66 feet, 7 inches.
Germany's David Storl had the winning throw, with a personal best of 21.78 meters, or 71 feet, 5 inches.
