Atlanta Phoenix Pee Wee Major Team wins the State Championship and moves on to Nationals.

Marek Lipold, of Bogart, has played hockey for about 9 years and joined the Atlanta Phoenix last season. The 13-year old Marek plays forward and leads the team in goals. During 2011-2012 season with the Atlanta Phoenix team, he scored 71 goals for 120 points in 57 games, averaging 1.75 points per game. Additionally, he was 3rd on the team with assists with 49. Some say he is considered one of the best shots in his age group in the league.

The Atlanta Phoenix Pee Wee Major team won the State Championship in early March, sweeping The Atlanta Fire to qualify for the National Championships. The Atlanta Phoenix Hockey Club plays out of the Duluth Ice Forum and consists of talented 12 and 13-year-old kids. The Atlanta Phoenix Pee Wee Major Team won their SYTHL division earlier this season with a record of 20 wins, 3 losses and 1 tie in league play and have finished the regular season with an overall record of 41 wins, 13 losses and 8 ties.

The team progresses to the National Championship PeeWee Tournament held in Reston, VA,  for play on March 28-April 1. The tourney will consist of 10 teams squaring off in four games of a round-robin section, with the top 4 ascending to a single-elimination round.

“This is a really big accomplishment for them to have progressed this far. Competing at this level is a lot of work for the kids and their families who spend a great deal of time and money traveling to make it happen,” says Traci Gagnon, whose son also plays on this team.
