School Board Recognizes Students' Achievements

At the meeting of the Oconee County School Board Monday, members applauded STAR students and teachers and essay contest winners.

The acknowledged students for recent achievements at their meeting Monday.

Three students were applauded for their in the Istanbul Center’s 2010-2011 Art and Essay Contest.  Savannah Smith earned honorable mention (Top 10 Georgia), Liz Duclos took fourth place in Georgia, and Kalyn Hardman won second place in the Southeast Region. Kalyn will represent the school during a 10-day trip to Turkey this summer.

The from and North Oconee County High School were also recognized at the meeting. They are NOHS student Eric Peyton and teacher Joseph Palmour, and OCHS student Katarina Jenkins and teacher Amy Mize.

Also at the meeting, the school board:

  • Set the election date as Nov. 8 for the renewal of the education local option sales tax (ELOST IV) referendum.
  • Approved meeting dates for 2011-2012.
  • Passed a resolution about class sizes for the 2011-2012 school year, the same waiver that the board passed in July. Assistant Superintendent of Financial Operations Randy Morrison said that historically Oconee County schools have been below the state's class size requirements, and he expects that to continue.  The waiver simply allows the board to have flexibility with the budget, he said. Board member Kim Argo voted against the resolution.
  • Approved revisions to policies about Financial Reports, Professional Development Opportunities, and Gifted Programs.
  • Approved a field trip for about 24 North Oconee County High School football players to attend  the 7 on 7 Football Camp at Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina in July.
  • Granted permission for the Oconee County High School's wrestling team to attend the 2011 FloNationals Wrestling Tournament in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.  The team will be there the first week of April. 
  • Passed a resolution of support for "A Vision for Public Education: Equity and Excellence," a partnership of the Georgia School Boards Association and the Georgia School Superintendents Association.  Board member Mike Hunter dissented.
