One Man's Trash Is A Teacher's Treasure

Organizers are seeking participation from local businesses for the Regional Teacher Reuse Store at the Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste facility Saturday, Aug. 13.

The (KOCBC) is teaming up with the to host the sixth annual Regional Teacher Reuse Store, a unique event that provides a variety of supplies and materials to local educators free of charge.

Not only will the effort provide usable materials to teachers at no cost, but it will also reduce the amount of waste disposed of in local landfills.

The group has called upon local businesses and industries to donate their discarded items and by-products that could be reused in the classroom.

Last year, more than 15 tons of donated materials were shopped over by teachers from both private and public schools in Clarke, Madison, Oconee and Oglethorpe Counties.

“It was amazing how much stuff they had last year,” said Angela Helwig, executive director of KOCBC. “There were chairs, desks, all kinds of office supplies and even some odds and ends you wouldn’t think anyone would want.”

Some of the items that have already been donated include office supplies like binders, file folders, clipboards, labels and paper. Other unusual items such as industry by-products (i.e., scrap lumber or bricks) that could be used for art supplies or classroom organization will be accepted as well.

The store cannot accept electronic items or hazardous materials.

The Teacher Reuse Store will take place Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Facility. To donate, drop items off at the ACC Recycling Facility at 725 Hancock Industrial Way, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
