Oconee County Schools One of Four Title 1 Reward Districts in Georgia

For continued improvements of its achievement rates,  Oconee County Schools has learned it is the recipient of $50,000.

The school system has been designated by the Georgia Department of Education the 2013 Title 1 Reward Medium-size District.

It is one of only four districts in the state to earn the award, Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning Dr. Claire Miller told the Board of Education this week.

"That means that our schools are working hard at improving the all student achievement rates as well as our high schools continuing to improve the graduation rate," she said.

Other systems being recognized for Title 1 achievements this year are Forsyth-Large, Jefferson City-Small, and Trion City-Extra Small.

According to www.ed.gov, "the purpose of [Title I-A]is to ensure that all children have a fair, equal, and significant opportunity to obtain a high-quality education and reach, at a minimum, proficiency on challenging State academic achievement standards and state academic assessments."

There are four Title I-A schools in Oconee County: Colham Ferry Elementary, Oconee County Primary, Oconee County Elementary, and Oconee County Middle School.  The funds will be directed to students at those schools, Miller said.
