Countdown to the End of Summer Vacation

The first day of the new school year is rapidly approaching. Here's some information to know.

More than 6,400 students will flood Oconee County classrooms for the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 10. There is some important information to know in order make the transition from summer vacation to a new school year a little easier.

Here are a few notes from Superintendent John Jackson's weekly column and an open letter to parents via email:

Know Bus Schedules and Routes: Visit the PowerSchool portal for current information.  The Oconee Enterprise has also published routes, according to Jackson.

Meal Price Increases: for breakfast and lunch this year.  Breakfast is now $1.25 across the board and lunch costs $1.75 for elementary students and $2.00 for middle and high school students.  The price for an adult meal is $3.00.  The changes will not affect students who receive free or reduced meals.

Meet the Teacher:  On Tuesday, Aug. 9, take a moment to get to know your student's teacher.  Elementary school teachers will be available from 1 -3 p.m. If you are the parent of a middle or high school student, meet the teachers from 2- 4 p.m.

Stay Connected: There are a number of ways parents can keep an open line of communication with the Oconee County School System.

  • One way is to join email lists for system-wide or school-specific news.
  • Stay apprised of school events by following a new online calender.
  • Parents can also sign up to receive voice and/or text messages through "Teleparent."  Update contact information through PowerSchool.
  • "Let’s Talk About It" is a new program that will enable parents and teachers to confidentially communicate with staff and officials. Jackson notes more information about the program will be made available in the future.
