91 Percent of Oconee Fifth Graders Pass Writing Test

More fifth graders are meeting or exceeding state standards for writing than ever before, superintendent says.

Writing test scores for fifth grade students attending Oconee County Schools have improved.

Superintendent John Jackson said 91 percent of students met or exceeded standards set by the state on the most recent exam. Last year, 90 percent passed.

The test requires students to submit a writing sample in response to a prompt and the sample is graded for organization, ideas, style, and use of conventions, he explained in an email to parents.

During , Jackson said he was proud of the students' achievement.

"We've really put a lot of emphasis on writing in the last couple of years because writing allows us for students not only to show their higher-order thinking, but it also integrates all the subjects," he said.
