The advisory was initiated as a precautionary measure due to a severe water main break. Sampling conducted in and around the affected area verified that there was no microbiological contamination present.

Many customers may notice discoloration or air bubbles in the water for a short period of time. The discoloration is a result of iron and manganese deposits that naturally occur on the interior of water pipes.

Water department personnel will continue flushing and monitoring operations until those issues are resolved.  We appreciate your patience cooperation and understanding in this matter. OUR EARLIER POST:

Due to a severe water main break, the Oconee County Utility Department issued a "boil water" advisory Monday morning for the city of Watkinsville and any customers south of  Simonton Bridge Road.

According to an announcement from the county, in order to protect the public from a potential health hazard, citizens who have experienced water outages and/or low water pressures in the affected areas are advised to boil all water prior to use for drinking, cooking or preparing baby food.

The water should be boiled for at least one minute after reaching a rolling boil.  Citizens should continue to boil their water until they are notified by Oconee County Utility Department that the water system has been restored to full operation and that the microbiological quality of the water in the distribution system is safe for human consumption.

Citizens with questions can call 706-769-3960 x 6019 or check the county website for further updates.
