Petition Against Proposed Dials Mill Road Recycling Facility Circulates

Opponents are voicing their concerns on social media and a newly-created website.

Opponents of the proposed Recycling and Materials Recovery Facility on Dials Mill Road have taken to social media and an online petitions website to spread their message.

The Facebook Page Don't Sort Trash On Our Doorstep, which carries the message,"tell the Oconee County Board of Commissioners that waste sorting facilities and residential neighborhoods don't mix!", had 47 "likes" as of Friday afternoon.

The website Stop the Dump urges community members to get involved and turn out to the next meeting of the Oconee County Board of Commissioners for a public hearing on the matter.

And a petition has also been circulating around the county.  Its online version had garnered nearly 100 signatures as of 5 p.m. Friday.

The family of Bernard Garrett is asking for a special use permit to construct the 26,000 square-foot facility as a way to expand current operations to "allow them to import a wider range of materials, including some household waste, so recyclable materials can be recovered and kept out of landfills," an Oconee County Observations report states.  Also requested is a variance for increased truck traffic.

Among concerns, opponents cite noise and odor. But the Garretts say the facility won't produce significant noise or smell.

The BOC meeting starts at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, at the Oconee County Courthouse.
