9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

Oconee County will join the rest of the nation in remembering the events of 10 years ago. A ceremony of remembrance will take place at 4 p.m. Sept. 11, on the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

A 6-foot-long steel beam pulled from the rubble of the World Trade Center will be at the center of the remembrance ceremony at Oconee Veterans Park in front of the Community Center. Wreaths will be placed on the beam during the observance. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be conducted inside the community center gymnasium.

The remembrance will bring together citizens, first responders and members of the armed forces. Taking part will be members of the Oconee County government, law enforcement and emergency officials along with representatives from Watkinsville’s Police Department. A military contingent from the Winder’s 1st Battalion 121st Infantry (48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team) will take part.
