Commission Seeks GEMA Grant, Sets Agenda for Upcoming Meeting

The $20,000 grant would help the county prepare for emergencies and lessen the impact of natural disasters.

Oconee County could be more prepared for natural disasters if approved for a grant from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency.

The $20,000 grant, which was green-lighted for application at Tuesday's Board of Commissioners agenda-setting meeting at the , would update the county's Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan.

Oconee County Agency Director Bruce Thaxton said the grant was last applied for in 2008 and the plan is due for an upgrade by 2013.

"Basically, it's a grant that won't cost the county any money," Thaxton said to the roughly 30 attendees of the meeting.

Other matters, including discussion about the project, won't be brought up until the next regular meeting March 1.

Placed on the agenda for next week's meeting were the approval of a new executive director for the Keep Oconee County Beautiful Commission and a motion to allow the purchase of an abandoned right-of-way on the northeastern side of the intersection of Macon Highway and Spartan Lane.
