Bubber Wilkes Exits Commissioner's Race

Family and work must take priority, he tells the Oconee Enterprise.

Former Oconee County Commissioner , a security officer at Athens Regional Medical Center, announced this week he will no longer seek the Post 4 seat on the Board, according to the .

Wilkes told the newspaper his wife's recent cancer diagnosis is one of the reasons it's not the best time for him to run for office.

"I feel like I need to be with her rather than out campaigning and politicking," he told the newspaper.

Retired Army Sergeant Major and UGA Chief of Staff and Senior Director of Development declared their candidacy for Post 4 earlier in the year, and farmer and builder has expressed interest in the race.

Candidate qualifying takes place Wednesday, May 23 beginning at 9 a.m. and runs through Friday, May 25 at noon.Β  The primary is July 31.

Chuck Horton, current Post 4 commissioner, told the Athens Banner-Herald in November of 2010 he has his sights set on the chairman's position. Current has yet to announce whether he'll seek re-election.
