Berry To Seek Re-election

Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry announces via Facebook his intention to run for a sixth term in 2012.

intends to seek a sixth term as Sheriff of Oconee County in 2012.

The announcement came in the form of a Facebook page created on Monday that is devoted to Berry's re-election campaign.

Berry, a 35-year veteran of law enforcement and Sheriff since 1993, currently serves as President of the Georgia Sheriffs' Association. He previously served as Treasurer, Second Vice-President, and First Vice-President.

Under Berry's leadership, the has "lead the way in investigating child abuse cases and getting convictions that have resulted in hundreds of years in prison time for child abusers," according to his campaign page.

Berry is also a proponent of the use of social media as a means of informing the public and says community involvement is a "hallmark" of his approach, the page notes.

So far two challengers have announced their candidacy: , a Madison County investigator and former Oconee County Sheriff's deputy, and , a detective with the Snellville Police Department. 

All three are Republicans and will square off in a primary.
