Woman Accused of Threatening to Hit DFCS Worker With Broom Handle

Oconee County Sheriff's deputies were called to a trailer in the Pinewood Estates South mobile home park last week where a worker with the Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) said a woman had threatened to hit her with a broken, sharp, metal broom handle.

According to an incident report, it happened on Nov. 13 just before 4 p.m. The DFCS worker told deputies she had been refused access to the children at the home and a 36-year-old woman picked up the broom and attempted multiple times to strike her with it.  She said she retreated to her car but the woman chased her and stuck the broom into the car through the passenger's side window and continued to swing it at her face saying, "I'm gonna hit you." A neighbor confirmed the DFCS worker's story.

When deputies spoke with the suspect, they say she became very irate, refused to get off of the phone and denied having tried to assault the DFCS worker. Furthermore, according to deputies, the woman refused to provide her name and birth date even after they told her she'd be arrested for non-compliance.  The woman replied by saying, "well take me to jail then," according to the report.  She then reportedly took a "fighting stance" and struggled with a deputy as he attempted to place the handcuffs on her.

Elizabeth Ayala was charged with obstruction of an officer and simple assault and taken to the Oconee County Jail where she was released later that day on a $1,500 bond.
