Watkinsville Police: Oconee Fire Truck Involved in Minor Traffic Accident

Sunday afternoon about 3:45 p.m. while responding to a fire call, Oconee County Fire Engine 101 was attempting to make a right turn from Main Street onto Harden Hill Road, with the green traffic signal, when a 2002 Honda Civic bumped the front of the truck, according to a news release from Watkinsville Police Chief Lee O'Dillon.

No one was injured and only minor damage was done, he said. The driver of the car advised that she was panic stricken when she saw the fire truck. The 23-year-old Athens woman was charged with failure to yield to the right of way to an emergency vehicle.

According to Oconee County Fire and Rescue, the fire truck had been headed to check on a report of smoke odor in a home in the 1000 block of Christian Court.

O'Dillon also recapped some of the other incidents that police responded to during the week ending on Aug 5:

• On Aug. 2, Melissa Riggs of Mars Hill Road picked-up her 6-year-old son’s prosthetic leg. Police recovered the device after a jogger located it along Barnett Shoals Road on July 23. Riggs and her son, Blu, recently moved here from Oregon. During this time she did not know what had happened to the lower right leg. Her best guess now is that another family member left it on the car after assisting Blu and it fell of the car while traveling on Barnett Shoals Road. See

• Late Thursday night police were called to a VFW Drive address to keep the peace while a woman gathered some belongings to leave. This is an ongoing domestic situation. The argument began when the woman was several hours late arriving home and the husband accused her of cheating.

• Approaching midnight Friday, police stopped the driver of a 2004 BMW 525-I after observing it crossing over the center line on Whitehall Road. Elizabeth L. Huskey, 47, of Calls Creek Circle, was charged with DUI and failure to maintain lane after failing sobriety testing. Huskey was booked and later released after posting bond.

• At 11:30 a.m. Saturday, police returned to a Jackson Street address concerning a child visitation issue. The matter remains tied-up in the Courts.

• A Sunday morning traffic stop resulted in charges filed against a Greene County woman. At 12:42 a.m., police stopped the driver of a 2002 Ford Explorer for traveling at a high rate of speed on Main Street. A routine computer check revealed that the driver's license had been suspended by the State.  Maria Victoria Acosta, 25, of Greensboro, was charged with speeding and driving on a suspended license. Acosta was booked into the Oconee County Jail. She was later released on bond.

• Police observed a 2007 Toyota Corolla crossing over the center line on Main Street and almost cause an accident on Sunday at 2:34 a.m. Police stopped the driver of the car near McRee Street at the railroad tracks. After failing sobriety testing Jessie M. West, 25, of Ashford Road, was charged with DUI and failure to maintain lane.  West was booked and later released after posting bond.

Watkinsville police responded to a total of 34 calls within city limits between July 30 and Aug. 5.
