Watkinsville Police: Man Pushes Former Girlfriend Out of Moving Car, Flees

An Athens man is behind bars in Oconee County, accused of shoving his former girlfriend out of her moving car, Watkinsville Police report.

Officers were called to a VFW Drive address Saturday around 2 p.m.  The woman told them she had been in an arguement with a former boyfriend over her 1999 Mercury Mystique, according to a news release from Police Chief Lee O'Dillon.

The woman said the man pushed her from the moving car, dragging her on the pavement, and fled the scene. Oconee County First Responders and National EMS treated her for "road rash," O'Dillon said.

Police issued a lookout for the stolen car and spotted it around 4:30 p.m. They attempted a traffic stop on Whitehall Road, but the man did not stop, O'Dillon reported.

The fleeing car continued into Clarke County where a Georgia State Patrol trooper joined the pursuit and performed a pursuit immobilization technique on College Station Road to bring the car chase to a safe end, O'Dillon wrote in the news release. The driver jumped out and ran away but was caught after a short foot chase, he added.

Jason Samuel Spiller, 31, of Oglethorpe Avenue in Athens, was arrested and charged with theft of motor vehicle, battery, attempt to elude police, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, and improper passing.
