Two Attempted Burglaries Overnight in Oconee Subdivision

A suspect fled on foot through the nearby woods and then escaped in a getaway vehicle, authorities say.

Residents of two homes in the Silverleaf subdivision near Jimmy Daniel Road awoke to the sound of someone attempting to break into their houses around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, authorities said.

A suspect apparently had tried to kick in the doors at 1120 Colorado Bend, Chief Deputy Lee Weems of the said. While on scene, deputies heard cries for help from a second house and ran over to assist, he said.

As they approached 1191 Colorado Bend, deputies saw a suspect run into a strip of woods and followed in pursuit, but heard the suspect get away in a vehicle, Weems said.  The vehicle left the area quickly and before deputies could catch a glimpse of it, he said.

Athens-Clarke County Police helped check areas close to the county line, Weems said.

At the second home, deputies discovered that entry had been gained through the basement, he said.

A detailed description of the suspect was not available Tuesday morning, Weems said. Additional suspects may have been involved, he said, and investigations are ongoing.

The Sheriff's Office is urging citizens to use caution and beware of any suspicious activity.
