Teen Faces Animal Cruelty Charge for Kicking, Stomping Duck to Death

Watkinsville Police say they charged with 13-year-old after motorists witnessed the incident on Greensboro Highway.

A 13-year-old boy has been charged with animal cruelty after Watkinsville Police say he kicked and stomped a duck to death.

Police Chief Lee O'Dillon in a news release reported that it happened about 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3.  The ducks had crossed Greensboro Highway from the pond in front of the Government Annex over to the Watkinsville Used Cars / Georgia Farm Bureau side, he explained. Motorists told officers they witnessed the teenager chase down and kill the animal.

The teen, armed with two knives and a backpack loaded with survival gear, was located nearby and taken into custody.  He was later released to his parents. 

The case has been forwarded to Oconee County Juvenile Court.

Officers also investigated the following:

  • A resident of Williamsburg Place reported on Tuesday, July 2, that when she returned home she found her front glass door had been shattered.  The damage appears to have been done by a BB gun.
  • On Wednesday, July 4, a VFW Drive resident reported that his mailbox had been smashed.  It appears to have been struck by a passing vehicle.
  • At 8 p.m. on Friday, July 5, police were called to a domestic dispute at the Luxury Inn, 173  South Main Street.  A 34-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman had been involved in a heated argument.  Alcohol was a major factor.  A family member arrived and took the man back to his residence in Morgan County.
Watkinsville police responded to a total of 31 calls within city limits between July 1-7 , 2013.
