Teen Charged with Aggravated Battery of Another Teen

Oconee County Sheriff's deputies over the weekend charged a 17-year-old with the aggravated battery of a another teen.

The 16-year-old male victim had allegedly been hit in the face at a Jones Road address late Saturday night, according to the victim's mother who contacted authorities.

The teen had to be treated at a hospital but details about the type of injuries sustained were not being released pending an investigation, Chief Deputy Lee Weems said.  Weems noted that "aggravated battery entails the loss of a body part or disfigurement."

While interviewing a group of teens and young men later at the Jones Road residence, deputies say they noticed "a very strong odor of alcohol coming from them." The deputies also noted in an incident report that they saw a large trashcan filled with beer bottles at the back of the residence.

According to booking reports, the following individuals were charged with underage possession of alcohol: Marques Steifon Maxwell, 20, of Marietta; Austin Antonio Gantt, 18, of Bogart;  Jarred Daniel Taylor, 20, of Kennesaw; and Donald Conner Peterson, 17, of Winder.  In addition, Peterson faces a charge of obstruction of law enforcement. 

A 16-year-old was also charged as a juvenile with underage possession of alcohol and released to his mother, according to the report.

A subsequent investigation led authorities to charge Hayden Chandler Lewis of Brookview Court in Athens with aggravated battery, Weems said.  As of Monday afternoon, Lewis remained at the Oconee County Jail.

"We're still continuing to investigate and trying to iron out the details of everything that happened," Weems said.
