Sheriff's Office Warns of Phishing Scams

Ignore calls and text messages attempting to obtain personal and banking information, the Oconee County Sheriff's Office advises.

If you receive a text message or phone call requesting credit card numbers or other banking and personal information, the best thing to do is ignore it.

The posted on Facebook that a man reported having received a phishing text message stating, "The CREDIT UNION CENTER ALERT: Your CARD has been DEACTIVATED."

According to the man, the text message urged him to call a number which connects to a computer-generated voice prompting the caller to leave a credit card number.

"NEVER give out this information to a caller no matter the message or number....your credit card company KNOWS your credit card numbers," the Sheriff's Office advised.
