Found Prosthetic Leg Returned to 6-Year-Old Owner

Watkinsville Police Chief Lee O'Dillon says the prosthesis belongs to boy whose family recently moved to Oconee County from Oregon.

Update: On Aug. 3, the Athens Banner-Herald reported Fritz Orthotics and Prosthetics in Athens examined the prosthesis and determined it would need to be replaced.  It will be taken care of with no cost to the family, according to the newspaper's article.

It had been at the Watkinsville Police station for about a week and a half, but Thursday morning, was returned to its rightful owner: a 6-year-old boy.

The prosthesis was found along Barnett Shoals Road near the Stone Shoals subdivision by a jogger on July 23.

At the time, O'Dillon floated numerous theories about how the prosthesis wound up on the side of the road.

Around lunchtime Thursday, boy's mother picked up the the prosthesis, a right leg painted dark blue with images of a stars and planets.  The family recently moved from Oregon to a Mars Hill Road residence, O'Dillion said.  The mother told the Athens Banner-Herald the leg most likely fell off of the roof of the car.

The mother informed officers the leg wasn't fully intact; it's missing a couple of components, including a shoe, Detective William Horton said.  However, it may be less costly to repair than replace, he said.

Glad they got it back, that's not a cheap piece of plastic. Thanks to the folks who found it and turned it in.

Another example of Oconee Countians lending a helping hand, er, well, you know what I mean.
