Oconee Sheriff's Office Crime Report

A highlight of incidents reported during the week of Feb. 17- Feb. 24.

investigated a report of a stolen truck, a burglary, and a fraud incident this week.  Deputies also made several arrests and charged suspects  --in unrelated incidents-- with theft by shoplifting, DUI, and battery.

  • On Feb. 17, John Newton Irvin, 28, of 127 S. Church Street was arrested and charged with DUI, driving while license suspended, window tint, open container, and failure to maintain lane, according to booking reports.
  • Oconee County Sheriff's Office is investigating a report of a stolen truck.  The owner of a 2003 black Dodge Dakota pickup with the Georgia license plate AMY5792 told police in an incident report that the vehicle was stolen between 3 p.m. on Feb. 18 and 9 a.m. on Feb. 20 from 1321 Julian Drive.  The truck is valued at $5,000.
  • Cheryl Ann Brown, 51, of 1011 Springview Ct. in Athens was charged with DUI and improper driving on the road on Feb. 19, reports noted.
  • Deputies arrested Henry Lewis Ambrose, 65, of 1038 Moreland Heights Drive and charged him with battery family violence on Feb. 19, booking reports state.
  • Antolina Vargas Ambirs, 27, of 303 Fawn Court in Athens was charged with theft by shoplifting on Feb. 19, according to booking reports.
  • On Feb. 20, Paula Parrton, 40, of 253 Magnolia Street in Athens was charged with theft by shoplifting, reports state.
  • A resident of 4091 Hog Mountain Road reported a burglary took place between 8:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. on Feb. 22., an incident report notes.  A diamond and sapphire ring valued at $6,000 and a tin can filled with about $300 in loose change was taken.
  • On Feb. 22, a woman tried to cash two fraudulent checks at a local bank believing they were legitimate, according to an incident report.  When questioned, she told deputies she had been hired as an online assistant via e-mail by two different companies that required her to deposit the checks, keep her "salary" and forward the remainder of the monies to addresses indicated in the emails.  The woman was not charged. 
  • Trina Queline Smith, 19, of 190 Baxter Drive in Athens was arrested and charged with forgery in the first degree on Feb. 22, reports note.
  • Two teenagers were charged with theft by shoplifting on Feb 22.  Joshua Ely Thomas, 18, and Tyler Charles Black, 17, both of 1020 Danielle Ct. were arrested, according to booking reports.  An incident report states a $10.48 pack of fuses was stolen from Walmart.
