Man Wanted in Oconee for Failing to Appear on Aggravated Assault Charge Picked up in Athens

Athens-Clarke County police also charged Billy Joe Furr with possession of drugs with intent to sell. An arrest doesn't mean a conviction.

An Athens-Clarke County officer on patrol around 5:30 p.m. on March 10 saw someone driving a vehicle that had a cardboard car tag. The officer stopped the car on on Danielsville Road at Walker Drive and talked with a man identified as Billy Joe Furr.

A warrant check revealed an outstanding warrant for Furr in Oconee County, so he was arrested. During a search of his vehicle, the officer says he found an open container of alcohol and two prescription medicine bottles.

One contained a prescription for Furr as well as a small plastic baggie containing a clear crystal substance, according to the report. The second bottle also contained a clear crystal substance as well as a small spoon and four small pills, the report stated.

Both crystal substances field tested positive for methamphetamine, police said, and he pills were determined to be a Schedule II substance. Also located in the vehicle were a digital scale and syringe.

Furr, 56, homeless, was charged with two counts of possession with intent to distribute schedule I/II drugs, drugs in original container, and possession of drug-related objects. He was also cited for open container. Bond for the charges in Athens was set at $6,500, according to jail records.  However, Furr was being held on the Oconee County warrant for failure to appear on an aggravated assault charge, the Athens Banner-Herald reported

Last November the former resident of Epps Bridge Road was indicted by an Oconee County grand jury on the charge. The indictment alleged Furr stabbed a man in the abdomen with a pocketknife on July 28, 2012.
